Promoting success for sustainability research in the Oceania region

Organizer: Iain Gordon
Format: Onsite-Online, Afternoon

The Network of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Research Organisations – Oceania (NITRO- Oceania, see http://nitro- has the mission of inspiring and supporting leaders of inter- and transdisciplinary organisations through advancing understanding of the challenges they face, as well as promoting action on the innovations and resources required to meet these challenges. In this SRI2021 workshop, established leaders of inter/transdisciplinary research organisations, mentees/early career researchers and participants from across industry, society and governments will explore how we can build impact narrative case studies for Oceania to foster effective collective action on delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2016, the United Nations launched the SDGs, a framework ‘to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all’. This is a major step in the collective agenda of sustainable development. Delivering the SDGs will depend on research to generate new knowledge and new technologies but, equally importantly, will depend on research to engage, connect and empower communities to deliver the 17 Goals and address the inevitable trade- offs between them. Effective partnership between research institutions, researchers and practitioners is, therefore, more important than ever in ensuring the use of evidence in decision making to find solutions that are relevant, realistic, and reproducible. In recent years, the development of sustainability science, based on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research skills, has received considerable attention from academia; however, the application of that science into the Oceania (Pacific/Australia/New Zealand and PNG) is less evident. This workshop aims to assess the requirements and evidence base for approaches to support the delivery of inter/transdisciplinary research leadership. The NITRO membership provide a set of case studies highlighting successes and failures with broader relevance to the region. The outcomes from the workshop will be posted on the NITRO website.
