Abstract:
Building climate resilience: legacy of the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) More than one billion people live in deltas, semi-arid lands, and glacier- and snowpack-dependent river basins in Africa and Asia, hot spot regions at the frontlines of a changing climate. The Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA, 2012–2019) built resilience in these hotspots through collaborative research stretching across 15 countries. Designed around four transdisciplinary research consortia, this initiative gathered more than 40 organizations and over 460 participants. CARIAA advanced knowledge and action on the implications of +1.5C warming, how outcomes of adaptation vary among women & men and different social groups, the interplay of migration and adaptation, and how private actors respond to climate risks. This session will provide an overview of CARIAA with speed talks from key research leaders on ongoing efforts to: • Reduce health risks of rising temperatures in South Asia • Mainstream locally-led climate-resilient development in Senegal • Evaluate & scale adaptation in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta • Increase irrigation from runoff catchments in Mali The session will also discuss lessons from managing large-scale collaborative research, as well as priorities for climate adaptation and resilience research in the 2020s.
