FEW not Fuel: designing biodiversity, food, energy and water systems in the Ogmore regional landscape

Organizer: Rob Roggema
Format: Online

Abstract:

Beyond the technicalities of the food-energy-water systems and their integration is the question how to design urban-rural environments in a way these are suitable for the local-regional context and acceptable for the community. In this session an inspirational approach to developing sustainable solutions at different spatial scales will be developed for ecological and durable futures. This is a virtual session in which a team of designers (landscape architects, urban designers, architects and ecologists), will design a sustainable future for the Ogmore (QLD) region. The main question discussed is how to present a future that is delivering the ecology, water, local food and renewable energy that is more than compensating for the impact of a planned coal mine. The team will be guided by the participants in the session, being the delegates of the conference by moderated questions and suggestions which will be drawn real-time on the MiRo screen, being visible to all participants. The result is a spatio-ecological vision for the case study region. The interaction between the design team and the delegates kindles creativity and shows ‘the making of’, eg. the way a regional sustainable design is conceived.
the session itself is design-led, therefore interactive and inviting participants to co-create new solutions for a given area.

This emphasizes collaborative learning, becoming familiar with the spatial opportunities and the applicability of current knowledge. The methodology that has been developed in the SPI_Europe M-NEX project will be followed which allows people to move through concrete steps towards an integrated spatio-ecological proposition, as an alternative to regular planning outcomes.
